Unacceptable Ads

Final Destination 5 Poster BANNED.

Some promotional ads can be over the top. Yeah all films have an age certificate, but that doesnt stop the underaged seeing the promotional material...

The advertising watchdog has censored a bus and tube advertising campaign for horror film Final Destination 5 which featured a skull skewered by iron rods, after complaints from parents that the violent image had made their children cry.

Hollywood film studio Warner Bros ran the poster campaign on the London underground and the side of buses to promote the launch of the latest outing for the Final Destination franchise.
The posters featured a skull being shattered with steel rods driven through its mouth and eye sockets, accompanied by the text "It's not if, it's when".

The Advertising Standards Authority received 13 complaints that the poster was distressing and unsuitable to be seen by children. Three of the complainants pointed out that their young children had become visibly upset when they encountered the bus ad.

Warner Bros said the poster "accurately reflected the content of the film in an appropriate manner without causing excessive fear or distress".

The studio said the skull was a "fantasy image", did not feature people, blood or display "any real life or interpersonal violence".

However, the ASA said the image was "likely to catch the attention of children".

Beano Comics

Dennis the Menace: 1980's
Dennis 9I've just been watching Dennis, the live version of Dennis the Menace and it made me think of the Beano franchise.

Its a little before my time, but I remember I used to read them when I was younger. My dad had loads of the originals from the 1980s and I loved them. Its a shame they dont still do them like this, the art direction of the retro Beano is fantastic...

Dennis the Menace
I think that some of the newer Beano comics are too realistic. I know theyre still cartoon so that sounds rediculous, but looking back at the older more original comics, the drawings were so much simpler and less polished. To me that is what a comic book is all about, or it might aswell be a book with real actors in it.

The Festive Season is upon us!

Merry Christmas... Or is it?

Personally I think christmas is great, but when people are talking
about it from the beginning of November it gets a little bit tedious.
The majority of us love the lights and the shopping and going to christmas
markets, but when we have to be put through constant advertisements for
christmas and theyre all the same, and non of them are even entertaining,
they all have one basic plan... to get money out of people!

Christmas is very commercialised & its a shame that people see it as a time
to go crazy and simply spend money they havent even got.

Bring back the real christmas spirit!

Lady Gaga - X-Factor

Marry the Night

I used to enjoy watching X Factor when it first began, but now I personally think its more about the judges and a popularity contest, not about those who can actually sing!!!

I heard that Lady Gaga was on last weeks show so I watched something else until I knew she was on, and then turned over when she finished, because she was the only thing worth watching.

some may say that shes too strange and she gets alot of influence from older artists like Madonna, which may have some truth in it, however... she can sing and continuously create fantastic music!

her performance of Marry the Night on XFactor was amazing.

I'm looking forward to the release of her new album 'Talk That Talk' we know she will deliver time and time again!

Memes

In our lesson today a few of us in the class were having a informal discussion with our tutor Frank about the advertising industry and his personal experiences with in industry and as he was talking to us he came across 'Memes' and amoungst other things I found this to be really interesting.

A Meme is something that can be passed onto society through good advertising and he used the example of 'Simples' from the meerkat adverts... and I have noticed this happening before, but I never knew that there was an actual word or phrase to describe it.

Type Matters!

Ive just had a great lecture from one of my tutors about all of the different aspects of typography, its early days yet but I can see that im going to really take a great interest in typography. There is alot more to it than youd expect, not just in advertising but in other design areas.

Ive been asked to look at the work of the late Maggie Lewis who was a well know typographer in the 1980s.

Our tutor also asked us to have a look at TedTalks which are a numerous amount of talks by many people heres the link to the design section, looks like hours of intriguing talks on here!

I love to design when ever I get the chance.

These 4 images are of my own bedroom. In March of this year I redecorated it... or should I say re-designed it. From floor to ceiling it changed from a teenagers room to a young adults. As you can see on these photographs, it looks like a completly different room.

Even though I am doing a degree in Advertisng, I still show a great interest in interior design, and I always will do.

If you know what you want, you can transform any room from 1* to 5*

If I get stressed out I watch this :D

Quite possibly the most hilarious video online!

My first project of year 2: MAGRITTE at the Tate Northern

For my first project of second year I have to create ads that promote the Rene Magritte exhibition at the Tate Northen in Liverpool. In my research I found that Magrittes work is influenced primarily by surrealism.. and its fantastic!!!
I love how witty and enjoyable his work is...

This is probably one of the most recognisable pieces of Magrittes work... Its wonderfully weird

magritte

I think its great how he obviously didnt care how people would react to some of his work. Even though some of his work is crude and some may consider it to be immature, I think its a good thing that he felt so free to literally create anything he wanted, even if people would find it hard to make any sense of.

Typography that makes me smile.

I think, any advertisement given the best possible typography will do well, even if its the most simple design it can be critical to the success of the campaign. There are hundreds of great examples of clever typography out there.
These are a few examples of typography that I like, they are all from a wide variety of campaigns which I found on http://bestphotoshoptutorials.net/2009/03/19/40-examples-of-beautiful-typography-in-advertising-design/

amazon-rock

This is fantastic, I love how Promotional posters, Album art work,  & Band photoshoots have been used to show the genre of music which is being advertised.

iPod: Nano Chromatic campaign... Its Bold and Brilliant!

I studied this campaign when I was doing my A-level Media project, and I still think its one of the best Apple have done. I think its great how bold it is...

The TV ad is so simple and it does the job of briefly taking the focus off the fact theyre music players; and showing that they are now available in any of these great colours!

Virgin Atlantic; 25 years, still red hot!

"See a TV campaign marking the airline's 25th birthday with classic 1980s images such as yuppies, Asteroids and a Rubik's cube. It was created by ad agency RKCR"

I love this ad.. I could watch it over and over, its more like a music video. Im adding this because I think it represents just how critical music can be to a particular ad. I dont think this would have done anywhere near as well as it has on Youtube without the audio input.

Currently; 236,251 views!

Dior Ad - with CGI Marilyn Monroe & other 'Old Hollywood' stars; Amazing!

I saw this a few days ago, and I thought it was a fantastic idea to use these old Hollywood stars. I think it helps continue Diors classy reputation. Its unbelieveable how perfect they have her mannerisms.
